Understanding Threat
Many of Langland’s NGO partners are at the forefront of efforts to preserve biodiversity and protect the natural environment. These partners often operate in challenging and rapidly changing environments and face a myriad of threats, ranging from risk of armed conflict, kidnapping, criminal violence, corruption, legal issues and environmental threats.
Langland’s threat analysis enhances partners’ strategic planning, effective resource allocation, and provides peace of mind for leaders deploying personnel into some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Our work understanding threat is bespoke to each partner and their specific needs. However, below we have listed just a few of the ways we can help.
-
Identifying Risks and Threats
We quantify and assess political instability and potential for unrest; risks of conflict, criminal violence and kidnapping; and environmental threats such as natural disasters, disease and challenging terrain. We review and analyse previous security incidents in the area and collate and analyse information from other NGOs’ experiences and reports in the region.
-
Stakeholder Analysis
We conduct analysis of the role and stance of local authorities towards NGOs, identify the presence and attitude of no-state actors such as armed groups and militias; and assess the influence and attitude of local community leaders and influencers.
-
Operational Vulnerability Assessment
We consider vulnerabilities to infrastructure and logistic supply chains, and assess medical and evacuation emergency procedures.
-
Legal and Ethical Considerations
We build understanding of the legal framework and requirements for NGO operations in the area; we assess any challenges to human rights and ethical practice.
-
Monitoring and Reporting
We conduct ongoing assessment using open and privileged information sources to continuously update the threat analysis and provide indicators & warnings for deployed NGOs. Through engagement with other NGOs, community leaders, and international organizations we capitalize on collective resources and experience.

Mitigation Strategies
Training: Provision of pre-deployment ‘hostile environment’ awareness training.
Contingency planning: Emergency evacuation and crisis management plans.
Risk Mitigation: Implementation of measures to reduce identified risks, such as advice on secure accommodation or transportation.
